Five Gold Emboidered Stumpwork Roundels with Mermaids: C17th English
Dating from the 17th century, a set of five hand embroidered decorative roundels.
Probably intended to be stitched onto items as a decorative element, these still have their original paper backing, the embroidery has been worked onto a fine cotton ground.
Each rounded depicts a pair of stylised stumpwork mermaid figures who are placed either side of a crown with floral motifs and gold and pewter coloured sequins.
The embroidery is worked in old gold wrapped thread.
