Dating form around the late eighteenth century a rare and pretty delicate floral print chintz pocket.
Pockets pre date handbags and were worn by woman rich and poor under their skirts to keep their possessions safe and close to hand.
This pocket would have been fastened to tie which was worn around the waist under an outer skirt and over a petticoat. There is an ivory coloured hanging ring attached to the top of the pocket for this purpose.
The pocket is English and is handmade from a softly coloured chintz. It has been edged with a hand woven cotton edging and is entirely hand stitched.
The condition is excellent considering the antiquity of this piece. there are a couple of sensitively worked historic mends, and two tiny rust marks on the edging braid which a specialist cleaner may be able to remove.
