Fine Silk Embroidered Wedding Shawl (Odhana Abochani )circa 1900
A wedding shawl worked in superb glossy silk embroidery on really fine cotton or tulle. Made in what today is the Pakistan side of the Indo-Pak borderlands of Sindh appear to have been produced in quantity at the turn of the 19th /20th centuries.
Worked in long stitch in floss silk on a fine muslin like cotton ground in typically ruby and emerald colouring reflecting local Mughal and Rajput jewellery.
Given that many of these shawls are found in Britain rather than the sub continent, it could be construed that these delicate and vulnerable shawls were quickly worn out in Sindh whereas, those that were shipped out to Britain via Karachi in the British Raj, survived.
In good antique condition with a few historic mends.
