Antique Collectable Patchwork ‘Tobacco’ Quilt: early C20th America
Item Details.
An extraordinary & highly collectable handmade quilt made from the free inserts called tobacco flannels that were sold with tobacco in the late 19th and early 20th century.
These inserts became collectable to thousands of men, woman and children. These collections were then painstakingly stitched together to form quilts and other ornamental objects for the home.
This unique antique quilt has a wonderful range of these ‘tobacco flannels’ including flags of the world , butterflies and American blanket designs. Some designs were targeted at women, but the majority of flannel themes were male oriented.
The quilt has been backed with a pretty and soft grey and mauve floral brushed cotton.
Measurements:
185 x 211cm
Condition.
The quilt is in very good antique condition with some rubs and losses to the surface of some of the thinner fabrics.
These could easily be replaced and or repaired.
