Antique German Folk Costume Ladies Gold Bonnet C19th
A rare gold bonnet from Bavaria in Germany - a riegelhaube or ‘latch plate hood’ circa 1830.
Traditionally worn as head coverings by the wealthy woman of Bavaria from 1755 until around 1850.
Constructed from a rigid card base and encrusted with gold flat thread metal embroidery.
Silver decorated bonnets were worn by unmarried women and gold, as in this case, by married women.
These caps took from 200-300 hours to make and would have cost several months wages.
In excellent condition with no signs of wear, some discolouration to the wire and lace edging the bonnet front through which hat pins would have fixed the bonnet to the hair.
