Antique German Folk Costume Ladies Silver Bonnet C19th
A rare bonnet from Bavaria, Germany - a riegelhaube or ‘latch plate hood’ ca 1840
Used as head coverings by the wealthy woman of the region and popular from 1750s until around 1850.
Made with a rigid card base and encrusted with silver sequins, twisted and coiled silver wires and silver beading and lived in a printed cotton.
Silver bonnets were worn by unmarried girls, gold by married women.
The caps took 200 - 300 hours to make and could cost several months wages.
This example is in excellent condition with very little signs of wear. There is a patina of age to the silver with is now dark and the wire which runs around the front of the bonnet has rusted and marked the lace which covers it.
