Early Silk and Silver Metal Thread Embroidered Panel: C17th English
Dating from the late 17th century a nice sized panel of silk and silver gilt work embroidery on a fine buttermilk coloured cotton backing.
This was originally on a silk backing and has been reapplied at some point in the textiles history, some small fragments of the original pale blue silk ground can still be seen.
The hand worked embroidery is of the highest quality and would have come from in a professional embroidery workshop, probably a commission, and may have been part of a set of bed-hangings.
The embroidery includes a myriad of different stitches and techniques, mostly carried out in silver gilt thread, with the floral motifs worked in silks.
In good antique condition the panel would benefit greatly from being stretched and mounted, a service which we are please to offer from our dedicated Cotswold based studio. Please ask us for details.
