Arts & Crafts Jacobean Revival Crewelwork Embroidery: C1920 Britain
Item Details.
Dating from the early 20th century this wonderful crewelwork embroidered Jacobean Revival panel from the Arts and Crafts period.
The hand worked embroidery features a stylised flowering Tree of Life in beautiful coloured wools with a lovely bird of paradise. And a snake wrapping itself around the tree from which huge elaborate foliage and flowers are blossoming. at the trees base is a deer and another bird.
These embroideries were sold in kit form and were stocked by stores such as Liberty of London. This one has ‘Penelope’ stamped on the lower reverse edge which I imagine was the name of this particular design.
All of these motifs have been inspired by Jacobean embroidery - which refers to embroidery styles that flourished in the reign of King James 1 of England.
Hand embroidered onto a natural cotton twill in coloured wools using a wide variety of stitches and embroidery techniques.
