Chintz Print Jacket with Velvet Details: mid-19th century American
Beautiful chintz jacket or bodice, dating from the mid to second half of the 19th century.
After seeing the marvellous chintz exhibition in London this spring, I was searching the internet for all things chintz and came across this lovely example from America.
Made from a printed cotton chintz with floral and foliage motifs, which all sing out against the black background.
The shape of the jacket is lovely, it is fitted as were all jackets and bodices at this time and would have been worn over a corset. The bodice is lined in an unbleached cotton twill.
The sleeves finish with a deep flounce which fall beautifully from the elbow.
Details are picked out with black velvet ribboning.
The bodice is in excellent condition for an antique garment of this antiquity. There is one historical mend that we have found.
Measurements taken whilst garment laying flat.
Across front at bust: 48cm
Length sleeve: 60cm
Length jacket: 69cm
