Decorative Engraved Brass Container with Lid: C19th India
A decorative antique handmade engraved brass container, tea caddy, with lid from India and dating from the first half of the nineteenth century.
All surfaces including the base are covered with decorative etching including hounds and with central roundels containing images of the Hindu monkey god Hauman, all skilfully worked by hand.
Made originally as a tea container for the European market, where tea was a highly priced and deserved a special airtight container to keep it fresh.
In excellent antique condition with an overall patina of age, the surface and edges have a lovely smooth appearance and feel where the container has been handled and used over the years.
