Hand Silk Embroidered Delhi Shawl: C19th India for export
A silk embroidered and signed Delhi shawl from India mid 19th century.
Hand embroidered in India for export to Europe where these shawls were immensely popular.
This shawl or stole is narrow and would have been worn in a loose shawl like position around the shoulders to lend interest to one’s costume.
Probably intended to be worn with a tight bodice jacket and wide crinoline skirt these shawls were the height of fashion following the Great Exhibition of 1851 after which all things exotic became de rigour.
The stole has a soft red pashmina ground and is hand worked with floss silk embroidery.

Condition: In good condition for an item of dating from the mid 1800s. The plain red centre has a scattering of tiny holes which could be mended and improved upon.
