Metal Thread Silk Brocade Bonnet: C18th Europe
From Europe, probably France, a bonnet made with a silver and silk brocade with side panels of black silk moire stitched in ribs and edged with decorative silver gilt lace braid. It is lined throughout in a soft hand woven loose-weave cotton.
We think this bonnet would have been traditional dress of a particular region and was made for a special occasion, possibly a wedding, as the fabrics used would have been very expensive.
In excellent antique condition, there is an overall patina of age commensurate with its age it has some loose threads and the lining is discoloured.
