Large Ottoman Gold Embroidered Sky Blue Silk Panel with Sequins
Dating from the first half of the 19th century Ottoman period comes this incredible sky blue silk taffeta panel embellished with gold-work hand embroidery and sequins.
The embroidery has a feel of the 18th century French Rococo style, but this is definitely Turkish. There are stylised horns of plenty, grasses and floral motifs which flow and repeat in a very pleasing manner across the surface of the silk. It would have originally been made into a woman’s Ottoman entari robe. Please see photos for an example from the Ashomlean museum Oxford.
This large panel has been carefully pieced together from smaller panels. It would work very well as a wall hanging and would suit most interior settings.
Mir is in good antique condition with a scattering of historic mends and a few light marked which it may be possible to remove with specialist cleaning.
