Silk Embroidered Ecclesiastical Cope or Robe, Mexico C19th
From Mexico and dating from the 19th century, a rare and extraordinary cope.
Made for the church and embroidered by local people, it is an intriguing mix of Latin American folk art embroidery and European high-church.
Hand embroidered onto a beautiful rich purple silk satin ground, the motifs are worked in vibrant coloured wools.
The cope is backed with a hand loomed linen.
The condition is fair for an antique textile of this antiquity. It has areas of wear particularly around the outer edges, but there are also areas within the cope where the silk has split and is worn. the embroidery itself is in very good condition.
This piece would suit most interior settings and could be hung as a decorative wall hanging.
