A figurative tapestry fragment dating from the 17th century with a depiction of a musician playing what looks like a viola but may be a medieval citole.
Hand woven in France using natural vegetable dyed silk and wools.
The central figure is dressed in medieval dress and was probably part of the border from a much larger tapestry panel.
It has been edged with a wool tape to make a frame and would very much benefit from being stretched and mounted, a service we are pleased to be able to offer from our dedicated textile conservation studios.
The tapestry is in good condition for a piece of this antiquity. It has some historic mends and repairs and some losses and marks to the wooden tape border.
