Item details: From France and dating from the around 1900 a beautiful whitework hand embroidered cornely embroidered lace work Chateau window length drape or curtain.

Entirely hand stitched onto a fine putty colour Indian muslin ground and embroidered with trailing floral motifs worked in chain stitch.

The first machines were invented in the early 1800s to imitate tambour embroidery and was invented by Bonnaz, Cornely bought the patent.

He then developed the needles to produce long lines of chain stitching enabling freehand designs to be produced on white lawn or muslin.

These curtains were hugely popular in France in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and still are today though they are getting increasingly hard to find.

The curtain has scalloped edges running down either side and is gathered along the top edge onto an original cotton curtain tape.
