Antique Georgian Crewelwork Embroidery with Birds and Florals: C1700s England

This showcases a spectacular example of English Georgian crewelwork embroidery, heavily influenced by earlier 17th-century Jacobean Embroidery.

It is worked with fine crewel wool yarn stitched onto a natural linen background.

The design features classic period indicators. Stylized, over-scaled flowers like fancy carnations and multi-layered blossoms. Fancy exotic birds featuring sweeping, dynamic crests and elaborate tail feathers. Large, scrolling acanthus-like leaves packed internally with intricate patterns.

A masterful mix of textures is created using a deep lexicon of traditional surface embroidery stitches. You can easily spot long-and-short stitch for the smooth color shading on the flower petals, stem stitch or split stitch defining the crisp vine and branch silhouettes, and dense seeding stitches or knots serving as textured structural infill.

The palette relies heavily on soft, period-accurate natural vegetable dyes. Muted shades of ochre yellow, sage and olive greens, cream, and soft terracotta pink blend together with incredible, subtle transitions.
