This is just lovely!
A fragment from a piece of costume dating from the early 18th century.
Handworked into a very fine buttermilk cotton (probably Indian) it has been embroidered in silks using minutely executed chain stitch.
This fragment has rows of tiny stitching holes which suggest it came from a garment that was once quilted, perhaps a woman’s bodice or petticoat?
A useful example of embroidery techniques, colour and textile from this period.
