Item details:

From France C1900 a beautiful whitework hand embroidered cornely lace work curtain panel.

Entirely hand stitched onto a fine Indian muslin ground and hand embroidered in mercerised cotton with repeating floral motifs worked in chain stitch.

The first machines were invented in the early 1800s to imitate tambour embroidery and was invented by Bonnaz, Cornely bought the patent.

He then developed the needles to produce long lines of chain stitching enabling freehand designs to be produced on white lawn or muslin.

These curtains were hugely popular in France in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The curtain has decorative scalloped edges running down either side and is gathered along the top edge in a cotton curtain tape to which ties are attached.

The most extraordinary thing about this entirely handmade panel is the exquisite historic darning which runs over large areas of the muslin ground and which is slimiest invisible to the naked eye.
