Antique Handmade Silk & Velvet Crazy Patchwork Quilt: C1880 English
An extraordinary and unique handmade silk and silk velvet patchwork quilt from America and dating from the last quarter of the 19th century, around 1880 (we can date this fairly accurately from the dress fabrics used).
Made in rich jewel-like colours with each patch carefully outlined with feather stitch in yellow silk thread.
The centre of the quilt has a carefully worked geometric log cabin design (a pattern passed down through the generations from the early settlers) which contrasts beautifully with the wide. crazy patchwork borders.
We have spent a week repairing and making good most of the damaged and worn patches using silks from the same era.The quilt would also benefit from a backing as it doesn’t have one.
