Indo-Portuguese Silk Embroidered Wall Hanging: C18th India (for Portuguese market)
From the 18th century an Indo-Portuguese, soft sand coloured hand embroidered silk satin hanging.
Embroidered in floss silks onto a satin ground, with decorative motifs including convolvulus or morning glory, with cornucopia in each lower corner.
Probably made in India, or possibly China for the Portuguese market in would have travelled along the Silk Road to its European destination.
A central heraldic shield or crest shows dancing dogs(?) and is topped by a coronet. To either side are two urns filled with hugs flowers.
The condition is good for a silk panel of this antiquity. There are some light marks, and a couple of stains which may respond to specialist cleaning.
Some splits to silk which we can attend to at our conservation studio. Please ask us for details.
