Antique Embroidered Gros Point Lace Wall Hanging or Curtain Tree old Life: C18th Venice, Italy
Item Details.
This has to be one of my all time favorite textile finds! I’ve never seen a textile like it and believe it may be a one off specialty commissioned piece. it deserves to be in a museum.
A huge size curtain or wall hanging dating from the early 18th century and entirely covered in handmade and applied Gros Point lace flowers and tendrils emerging from 3 sinuous Trees of Life.
Possibly made as part of a brides dowry,
this amazing embroidered textile really is a labour of love and as such has been carefully kept and treasured, probably by a family passing it down through the generations.
The embroidery on the Trees of Life’s reminds me of white coral, it’s an amazing technique where threads are laid down and stitched in ever increasing numbers to form the trunk and branches of the tree.
We have spent time professionally repairing a multitude of small holes and weaknesses in the linen ground. We’ve kept the original lining attached to the back but it woukd benefit from a new lining as part of the hanging isn’t lined.
The whole textile has been finished with a later cotton fringe.
Measurements:
229 cm wide x 255cm long
Condition: In good antique condition with new repairs, historic mends and patches as you would expect in a textile of this antiquity.
