Antique Jacobean Revival Crewelwork Embroidery with Adam & Eve: C19th Britain

Dating from the 19th century this wonderful crewelwork embroidered Jacobean Revival panel from the Arts and Crafts period.

The hand worked embroidery features a stylised flowering Tree of Life in softly coloured wools with Adam and Eve in costume - Adam is particularly fine with a wonderful curly wig, erimine trimmed cloak and boots with bows! There is what we think is a snake wrapping itself around the tree. Also, a giant strawberry, sheep, and huge elaborate foliage and flowers, all inspired by Jacobean embroidery - which refers to embroidery styles that flourished in the reign of King James 1 of England.

Hand embroidered onto a natural cotton twill in organic coloured wools it has been stretched over a wooden board which ideally needs replacing with acid free board. This is a service we can offer from our dedicated textile conservation studio, please ask us for details.

46cm across x 37.5cm tall

Condition.
In excellent condition with an overall patina of age and some fading to colours. All of our textiles are antique and as such have all the idiosyncrasies of old and loved items so small flaws, marks or loose threads, are to be expected.
