Antique Jacobean Revival Printed Linen Collectable Antique Textiles Design Inspiration Figurative Wallhanging. 83 x 73cm

This decorative printed linen is an original archival design originating from the late 1920s. The pattern was inspired by mid-16th-century embroidered "slip work" traditionally stitched onto medieval bed hangings, tapestries, and chairs and also drawing inspiration from traditional European pictorial textiles and crewel work.

The central vignette features a couple in historic clothing (reminiscent of the Charles II or Restoration era) standing under a classic domed garden pavilion.
The Shepherdess: In the upper left quadrant, a woman is depicted tending to her sheep in a bucolic landscape, which is a staple theme of French Toile de Jouy.
Graceful deer and peacocks are scattered across the winding garden pathways amidst stylized trees, flora like roses and wild strawberries, and distant castle turrets.

The specific rich, earthy palette with muted plum, sage, and cream tones colorway against a soft chocolate ground.

Condition:
Good antique condition with no damage. Slight overall fading. This would make a superb wallhanging and would benefit from being stretched and mounted which is a service we offer at our textile conservation studio in the Cotswolds. Please ask us for details.
