This piece is an antique Japanese silk embroidery tapestry dating from the Meiji Period (1868–1912).

The wallhanging depicts red-crowned cranes (tancho) amidst blooming cherry blossoms (sakura). In Japanese culture, cranes symbolize longevity, fidelity, and good fortune, while cherry blossoms represent the beautiful, transient nature of life.

This is an example of Nihon Shishū (traditional Japanese embroidery). It utilizes fine silk
threads meticulously stitched onto a luminous, satin-weave silk gold coloured ground.

A highly stylized floral border frames the central natural scene, a layout characteristic of large-scale hangings produced during the late 19th and early 20th centuries intended for both domestic display and Western export.

Condition:
Some historic repairs and a new linen backing has been applied to give support to the delicate silk satin face.
