Hand Painted Mordant Dyed Indian Chintz ‘Bauwen’ Stomacher or Dress Front: C19th Marken, Friesland
Item Details.
A wonderful panel of Indian block printed and hand painted & glazed chintz dating from the late 18th - early 19th century.
Known as ‘Bauwen’ these decorative chintz panels were traditionally worn as stomachers or dress at the front of their dress by the woman of Marken, a fishing community.
With a pretty floral pattern worked in reds, purples, pinks and blues onto a mauve ground this is a lovely example of a chintz of this type. The design is clearly influenced by much earlier 18th century Indian chintzes.
We have professionally mounted this panel on a beautiful aubergine matt silk which compliments the colours in the chintz panel. It is on a lined and interlined conservation quality board and is ready for framing.
