Early Hand Painted Appliqué Chintz Panel: C18th Coromandel Coast, India

A long appliquéd hand-painted mordant resist dyed panel dating from the mid 18th century, Coromandel Coast, India.

Probably originally one of the pelmets from a set of bed hangings made for the European market, this is a rare survivor.

At its centre a lion sits atop a vase or urn which forms part of a beautiful garland of flowers and drapery. Butterflies flit decoratively above. All hand painted in indigo blues and madder reds onto a very fine hand loomed Indian cotton.

The panel is on its original ground and has been professionally stretched and mounted over lined and interlined conservation board. It is presented in a simple hand painted unglazed frame.

The condition os excellent for a domestic textile from this era. Some losses and wear to the surface, some small marks and historic repairs, nothing detrimental to the piece as a whole.
