Item Details.
Am really pleased with this wonderful find.

An ecclesiastical stumpwork, embroidered and appliquéd shawl worn around the neck by a priest.

Dated 1828 but made using much earlier embroidered figures taken and re-applied from an 16th century panel.

On one side it has a figure holding a baby (Christ) on a very decorative and wonderful horse with a figure walking alongside. Underneath is written ‘ Clair de la charity Dethevvray “ .

The other side has a depiction of a Madonna and child.
Worked in applied metal thread embroidery with decorative bands of gold metal braid and embroidery worked in silk thread.
The figures are embroidered with laid thread work over a hand loomed hessian backing which can be seen in areas where the silk covering has worn away.

A wonderful piece that would benefit by being conserved, stretched and mounted which is a service we are pleased to be able to offer from our dedicated textile conservation studio in the Cotswolds.

Measurements:
113cm long plus 7cm fringe x 38cm widest point
7cm narrowest point.

Condition.
In overall timeworn condition with surface wear, rubs and losses to silk, losses to wool ground around edges, loose threads small holes and an overall patina of age to whole piece.
