Long Antique Silk Embroidered Wall Hang Hanging: C19th China

Item Details.
A long antique silk embroidered wall hanging or room pelmet handmade in China and dating from the late 19th century.

Entirely hand stitched and embroidered in floss silks onto a rich deep midnight blue silk satin ground. The embroidered borders have been worked in the traditional floral design to that found on Chinese robes dating from the same era.

There are eight figures in total, six male and two female, perhaps depicting charachters found in Chinese mythology (?). The oldest figure has carefully embroidered wrinkles!

All the figures are holding items of significance and are surrounded by stylised trees, flowers and landscape.

The panel is backed with a fine polished indigo dyed cotton which is folded over along the top edge through which a pole can be passed.

Its going to be hard to part with this piece! Some textiles just speak to you in a way that can be extremely difficult to ignore….

Condition.
In good overall condition for a textile of this era. There is wear to surface of silk satin and some historic conservation repair work to silk backing. Embroidery in remarkable condition.
