Pair of Arts and Crafts Hand Painted Ecclesiastical Appliqués: Mid 1920s European
A pair of hand painted Arts and Crafts ecclesiastical appliqués dating from around 1925. Hand painted onto silk satin and then embroidered with applied gold thread work.
The work is beautifully executed and they are in such excellent condition they look as though they have never been used.
Probably made to be sewn onto a chasuble or banner, they are European, possibly French.
Both images are of Christ. The second is an image of Christ the King a devotion begun in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. Stylistically this second embroidery is from that exact period. On the halo are the Greek letters Alpha and Omega -The First and the Last - references only to The Saviour.
These would look really good mounted and framed, something that we specialise in at our dedicated conservation studios, please ask us for details.
