Palampore Border Fragment Bespoke Mounted and Framed: C18th Coromandel Coast, India
This has to be one of our all time favourite pieces to ever pass through our hands.
One of the joys of our work as conservators is getting to know textiles intimately in a way very few people do, sometimes being the first person to put and needle and thread to it in over 300 years.
We have stretched and mounted this fragment of hand painted chintz over a lined and interlined board and have put it into a bespoke hand painted frame carefully chosen to compliment the colours in the textile. Our frames are unglazed so that viewing the textile is uninterrupted, this also allows ease of access for light surface cleaning.
This chintz panel originally formed part of the border of a large Palampore hanging which would have been made as drapes for a bed. Palampores were hugely popular and went on to be produced in Europe to satisfy the demand for these highly decorative and exotic textiles/hangings.
It’s rare to find a piece of hand painted chintz from the Coromandel coast and I have to admit it was love at first sight……..Swags of flowers are caught up by ribbons with bows and wonderful tassels, with vases bursting with flowers interpersonally the floral swagging.
In excellent condition for a piece of this age. A historic mend and some small areas of light discolouration.
