Silk Embroidered Crazy Patchwork Panel: C1930s English

This is extraordinary!

Item Details.
This is such a fascinating piece dating from the 1930s. A handmade crazy patchwork panel with layers of silk embroidery.

The first layer is the patchwork made on an unusually small scale, it has uneven pieces of cut silk in a variety of colours, patch-worked together in the crazy patchwork style.

The next layer has hand embroidered motifs including dragonflies, beetles, spiders and webs, moons and stars alongside oriental symbols and the date 1938. There is also a meandering couched gold thread line which wraps around the outline of the moons, and forms spirals in places.

The top layer forms a sort of net over the layers beneath and is an embroidered pattern of squares which both holds and brings subtlety to the embroidery and colours beneath.

A really interesting piece for study or as part of a collection. It would benefit by being stretched & mounted a service we are pleased to be able to offer from our antique textile conservation studio.

Condition:
In excellent antique condition, some rubs, and loose threads. Nothing detrimental to the piece as a whole.
