Item Details.
Dating from the latter half of the 19th century this Turkish domestic lightweight cotton was probably originally used as a Boçha wrapping cloth or shawl.
From Kandili, an Asian suburb of Istanbul which formally had a significant Greek population where cotton printing went on and by which term theses prints are popularly known. The other larger centre of woodblock printing being Tokat close to Izmir in Western Turkey.
This is a good 19th century example of a Kandili block print in an unusual colour palette with black ground.
