Antique Crewelwork Tree of life: C18th England

Item Details:
From the collection of a writer, academic and expert on textiles, this Tree of Life wallhanging.

The embroidery dates from the early 18th century and has been painstakingly reapplied to the light biscuit colour backing you see here.

With wonderful crewelwork embroidery depicting fabulous foliage and floral motifs all hand embroidered in natural coloured wools onto a linen ground.

No doubt the original backing had perished, as is often the case, when someone in the early 20th century decided to save the embroidery. You can still see pencil marks where the embroideress planned to add branches.

Measurements:
Length: 171cm
Width: 137cm

Condition: Good antique condition, some signs of wear, historic mends and an overall patina of age as you would expect in an antique domestic textile from this era. Some of the crewelwork pieces are loose and could do with stitching securely into place.
