Antique Hand Painted and Drawn Chintz ‘Bauwen’ Breast Panel: C19th Marken, Holland

Item Details.
A wonderful small size panel of Dutch block printed and hand painted chintz dating from the early 19th century.

With an interesting floral pattern in a beautiful and cheerful colour-way of deep pinks, mauves and teal green on a bright blue still with traces of the original glaze. This is an excellent and unique example of a Dutch chintz of this type, and is clearly influenced by earlier Indian chintzes.

These panels were worn by the woman of Marken as dress fronts or stomachers, part of the traditional costume of this island. See our photos for original historic photos showing woman wearing Bauwen.

Condition.
