Antique Silk Embroidered Panel with Appliqués: C19th Rescht, Persia
A lovely panel of Rescht polychrome embroidery dating from the 19th century.
Made from fine woollen broadcloth (possibly Stroud?) which looks like appliqué but is in fact a complicated process where shapes are cut out from the ground cloth and different colours pieces are inset inset to the space. This is incredibly skilled work as the pieces have to exactly match the cut out holes. Once inset they are embroidered in place with silk thread tambour work.
Decorative tambour work stitching is then added to the whole piece. This piece has a particularly charming tassel design around the borders. In distinct stamp on reverse.
