Charming Jacobean Revival Printed Linen Panel with Figures, Animals, Florals: C1920 England
A wonderful Jacobean Revival printed linen from England, dating from the early 20th century, around 1920.
Printed in soft pastels with Royal Symbolism, one panel prominently displays the initials "C R" flanking a central floral motif. These initials likely stand for Carolus Rex, referring to King Charles I.
Traditional heraldic figures, including the Lion and Unicorn (the supporters of the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom), are shown multiple times.
The date "1630" is printed into the design, appearing above the "C R" initials, which firmly places the stylistic inspiration in the early 17th century during the reign of Charles I.
The central section depicts a man and a woman in period dress, surrounded by various flora (thistles, roses) and fauna (a squirrel and a bird). This "stumpwork" or needlework style was common for decorative items like cushions or fire screens.
A delightful piece that would benefit by being stretched and mounted, a service that we offer at our dedicated textile conservation studio in the Cotswolds.
