From Vienna, Austria, a highly decorative stylised Tree of Life hand worked in wools with appliqué elements on a pale yellow silk damask ground.
Worked in a Jacobean style of embroidery. The artwork showcases a stylised, winding tree rooted inside a patterned vase or urn, branching out into a whimsical variety of fantastical flowers, leaves, and seed pods.
A highly unique, cohesive colour scheme dominated by lavender, plum, soft teal, with dusty rose accents, all set against a muted pale-yellow silk damask background.
Classic jacobean elements are visible throughout, including stylised drooping fuchsia-like blossoms, a large central roundel flower, and highly detailed, variegated leaf patterns filled with varied textures.
The texture suggests traditional crewel work utilizing wool or specialty threads to build dense textures like satin stitch, long-and-short stitch, and chain stitching for the thicker stems.
Dating from the 1910 - 20s, and very much in the influential Viennese style of the period.
In excellent antique condition, the textile has been professionally stretched and mounted over lined and interlined conservation board and is ready for framing or to be hung as it is.
