Pair Decorative Ottoman Giltwork Velvet Embroideries with Peacocks: C19th Ottoman Turkey, Asia

A pair of highly decorative gilt work zardozi embroidered velvet panels with birds and peacocks.

Hand embroidered onto a cream cotton velvet in the latter half of the 19th century these panels are covered in gold thread stumpwork embroidery including peacocks and smaller birds, flowers and in each of the four corners a basket. The central peacocks have their tails studded with coloured sequin decoration.

Typical of traditional Ottoman embroidery there is also a strong resemblance to Indian zardozi embroidery.
