Rare Fine Crewelwork Embroidery with Hunting Scene in Safavid, Persian Style: C18th Europe

Dating from the late 18th, early 19th century this rare crewelwork embroidery in landscape form depicting huntsmen in a hunting scene, inspired by Persian Safavid embroideries and carpets. Possibly once part of some bed hangings.

Embroidered in fine wools onto a natural cotton twill type material in a muted colour palette of pale olive green with a deeper blue green. We think these colours would have originally been more vibrant and have since faded.

There is a central figure in what looks like chainmail armour with an elaborate turban like headdress with three magnificent feathered plumes, similar to those which were worn by royal attendants.

The panel has been professionally cleaned, stretched and mounted onto lined and interlined conservation grade board and has an inner linen covered slip frame. It comes in a bespoke unglazed handpainted wooden frame and is ready to hang.
