Antique Folk Costume ‘Bauwen’ Dress Panel Block Print Chintz: C19th Marken, Holland
Item Details.
A wonderful panel of Dutch block printed and hand painted chintz dating from the early 19th century.
With an interesting repeating pattern, unlike any we have seen before, oval shaped motifs with serrated edges interspersed with pretty florals block printed onto an off-white fine cotton ground. This is an excellent and unique example of a Dutch chintz of this type, and is clearly influenced by earlier Indian chintzes.
These panels were used by the woman of Marken as dress fronts, part of the traditional costume of this area, Noord-Holland. Please see our photos for historic images of woman wearing Bauwen.
This panel would benefit from being stretched and mounted, a service we specialise in at our dedicated textile conservation studio.
