This is a beautiful example of a vintage crewelwork textile featuring traditional imagery.
With classic crewel embroidery in a historical style traditionally worked with tightly twisted wool yarn on a sturdy linen backing.
Heavily influenced by classic 17th-century Jacobean crewel work and Indo-European Chintz/Indienne designs.
It features an array of stylized florals, inspired by antique botanical illustrations of individual flowering specimens such as carnations and other stylised blooms, crawling insects (such as dragonflies and butterflies), and intricate vine layouts typical of traditional hand-stitched panel work.
Finished with a solid green piped binding around the edge, pieces like this are highly versatile and often used as a heavy bedcover, coverlet, quilt top, or statement wall hanging.
