The War of Troy Antique Wallhanging Tapestry: C19th Europe, possibly France
A printed adaptation from an original tapestry ‘The War of Troy’ 1475-1490 which is now on display in The V&A London, this hanging was printed in the 19th century, probably in France.
It is believed there were originally 11 tapestries, others from the series along with the original drawings are held at the Louvre in Paris. This panel is an adaptation of the middle part of the ninth in the series entitled The Arrival of Penthesilea or The Arming of Pyrrhus. The original tapestry was bought by the V&A with recommendations from William Morris and Edward Burne Jones as art referees.
In the centre is a battle between the Amazons and the Greeks, and on the right we see Pyrrhus being armed. The tapestry is crammed with beautifully executed and lively scenes of battle, kings, queens, princes, warriors and horses. Contemporary costume and armour, waving banners and a military tent are depicted in exquisite detail.
