Antique Crewelwork Embroidered Tree of Life Wallhanging in Antique Japanese Bamboo Frame (2): C1900 Britain
This beautifully handmade bamboo frame from Japan dates from the Arts and Crafts era and is the sort of item that was imported and sold by Liberty of London throughout the 19th and into the 20th centuries.
We sourced the frames, which were once part of a screen, and were delighted to find that these hand painted and embroidered Tree of Life panels fitted. We then married the two together, stretching and mounting the embroideries over the original stretchers to make what you see today. Each panel is backed in a high quality Italian linen.
Japanoise and Chinoiserie styles were hugely popular at this time as travel became easier and the world opened up. Everyone wanted a taste of the East in their interiors and Liberty’s provided it for them.
In excellent antique condition and professionally handmade in our dedicated textile conservation studio with care and attention to detail. All antique materials used are from our own textile collection.
We have two of these unique and special panels in stock, please see our other listings for another panel.
