Antique Hand Painted Mordant Dyed Madder and Indigo Indian Chintz Bauwen Breast Panel: C18th Marken, Holland

Item Details.
A wonderful small size panel of Indian block print, resist dyed and hand drawn and painted chintz dating from the 18th century.

These ‘bauwen’ panels were used by the woman of Marken as decorative dress fronts or stomachers, part of the traditional costume of this area, Noord-Holland. This panel has a monogram “T K” in tiny cross stitches.

With a lovely floral pattern with pear shaped pods, worked in madder red, indigo and dark brown block printed onto an off-white fine linen ground.

This is an excellent and unique example of a chintz of this type, and are perfect for collecting examples of hand blocked prints from this era. Please see our other listings for more ‘bauwen’ chintz dress panels.

27 x 21.5cm

Condition.
In very good antique condition with some of the original glaze still discernable.
