Antique Silk Embroidered Wallhanging with Birds and Mythological Figures: C19th China for export to Europe
Item Details.
A large garnet red silk embroidered wallhanging dating from around 1900.
Hand embroidered in China for the European market and probably intended as a large bedcover. The hanging has a deep hand knotted double silk fringe running around all sides.
The central roundel is exquisitly embroidered with beautiful exotic birds and the hanging has in each corner mythological scenes with figures including Angels, known as Apsara. There’s an all over floral motif pattern which makes this a highly decorative and pleasing piece.
Embroidered in beautiful muted colours onto a deep crimson ground this would suit a wide variety of interior settings.
Measurements:
180 w x 235cm L plus 47cm fringe
Condition:
In excellent antique condition with an overall patina of age. Some beautifully executed historic mends around the outer edges and some losses and breaks to the fringing, hardly noticeable to this amazing piece.
