Silk Embroidered Fan in Original Hand Painted Box: C1900 Japan

Dating from around 1900 a fine silk gauze silk embroidered fan from Japan and dating from the 19th century, it was probably brought back as a gift by a traveller or merchant.

Hand made from an extremely fine silk gauze it has been embroidered is silks with honeysuckle, and floral motifs with two storks which represent prosperity and longevity, it is also a symbol of grace, wisdom and good luck.

The fan has a beautifully carved frame and is finished with two silk tassels. It fits perfectly in its specially made box which is lined in hand painted silk.

The outer of the box is lacquered and hand painted with a decorative gold motif.

The condition is good for an item of such fragility and antiquity. There is a break on the outer frame which it may be possible to have repaired by a specialist. There’s also some breaks in the gauze silk, nothing that is detrimental to the piece. The box has o small scuff on one corner.
