Antique Silk Ikat Chapan Robe Coat: Turkmen C19th century
A silk Ikat coat from the Turkmen of Turkmenistan dating from the second half of the 19th century.
Made from a wonderful hand loomed zig-zag, Ikat silk in a beautiful colour combination of green and purple. The photographs do not capture the almost insect-like iridescence of the silk.
The coat has been lined throughout with a traditional block print and the coat revers are edged with a vibrant Ikat silk. The sleeve arms, front openings and hem are all finished with finger-woven silk braid.
In good antique condition with some water marks, and a historic and rather lovely patch inset into the silk below the left arm. Some wear around the collar area.
Measurements taken with coat lying flat.
Across front: 60cm
Length: 125cm
