A Rare Antique Chintz Panel Birds of Paradise Baskets of Fruit: C19th France

A classic bird-of-paradise and fruit textile pattern designed by the 19th-century French illustrator and textile artist Georges Zipélius.

Active in Mulhouse, France, Zipélius (1808-1890) was highly celebrated for his intricate panoramic wallpapers and beautifully engraved furnishing fabrics.

His work is preserved in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the Deutsches Tapetenmuseum.

A wallpaper design: El Dorado, in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt, was co-designed by Zipélius with Eugène Ehrmann and Joseph Fuchs; it took them two years to design it; it is still in print today. Zipélius was from Mulhouse and attended the L'Ecole des
Beaux Artes.

This textile composition showcases one of his signature, deeply saturated colour palettes, pairing a rich deep violet backdrop with vibrant, greeny-yellow botanical elements and tropical fauna.

A rare piece, highly collectable. Great for a textile enthusiast for study.
