Antique Arts and Crafts Art Nouveau Block Printed Velvet, Poppies by Lindsay Butterfield: C1890 England

A good size panel of "Poppies," an iconic Arts and Crafts Movement textile design created in 1901 by the prominent British freelance pattern designer Lindsay Phillip Butterfield.

The design features large-scale, finely drafted naturalistic poppies intertwined with long, sinuous acanthus foliage.

Strongly influenced by his contemporaries like William Morris and C.F.A. Voysey, Butterfield's work reflects a deep passion for wild British gardens and botanical geometry.

Originally produced as a block printed furnishing velvet by the manufacturer Turnbull & Stockdale. It was distributed through high-end fashionable retailers of the era, notably Liberty's of London.

The original textile pieces and paper pattern designs are preserved in the permanent archives of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Modern reinterpretations of his classic poppy motif continue to be produced today by brands like Liberty Fabrics under collections such as the Botanical Atlas.

This fabulous furnishing fabric shows the fine draughtsmanship and passion for gardens that are typical of the Movement's textile designers.

Butterfield was one of the most successful freelance designers. He provided textiles and wallpaper patterns for a number of manufacturers. Turnbull & Stockdale made this fabric. They produced both block-printed and roller-printed furnishing fabrics for a wide range of fashionable shops, including Liberty's and Maples in London.

Very good. An overall patina of age commensurate with antiquity.
Made from one selvedge to selvedge panel with a narrower panel joined down one side.
very slight fading down one side and stitch marked where it was once made up into a curtain.
